My Books

Voyage of Midnight (Chronicles of Courage)
Africa . . . I peered at the African continent on the chart, my breath catching with the promise of adventure. “What’s in Africa besides jungles?”
At this, Uncle straightened and placed a strong, square hand on my shoulder. His expression was solemn. “Philip lad, have you ever wanted to be rich?"
I remembered my vow to never be hungry again. And since arriving in New Orleans, I’d kept that vow. Money was the answer. Money and family. “Yes, I want to be rich.” More than anything, I realized.
Uncle’s lips curled up in a smile. “There’s black gold in Africa, Philip.”
  "Black gold?”
  “Slaves, lad. Slaves,” he hissed.

Voyage of Plunder (Chronicles of Courage)
And then I heard them. The pirates. A clash of screams pierced the air, mixed with a screeching wail of trumpets, violins, drums, flutes. Hair prickled on the back of my neck. Panicked, I glanced about the captain’s quarters. I needed some sort of weapon to defend us.
Suddenly, everything turned quiet. Deathly quiet.
Then I smelled it. The stench of smoke. The nightmare of every sailor. My voice shook. “The ship is afire. We can’t stay down here or we’ll burn alive.”

Voyage of Ice (Chronicles of Courage)
The water became darker, black almost, and I knew from the surge in my blood it was a whale rising. Close, too close! Before I could cry out, the whale erupted from the water with a blast from his blowhole. A mist stung me, a stench of rot, as the whale’s body blotted out the sun, his vast form suspended in the air.

To the Edge of the World
On the first day of June, in the year of our Lord 1519, I, Mateo Macías de Ávila, a Spaniard by birth, buried my parents. . . . Afterward, I burned the farm. . . .

Join Mateo on one of the greatest adventures in history, as he sets sail with the historic Ferdinand Magellan.

Bottles of Eight and Pieces of Rum
Kip held the bottle up to the light. Inside was a miniature, wooden two-masted ship. . . . Written on the back of the ship were two microscopic words: Jezebel’s Revenge.
A blast of cold wind rushed through the attic, like a locomotive screaming through a tunnel. Heavy and fierce. Cold water splashed on his head. He looked up just as a gigantic wave of water roared down on top of him. . . . He choked and coughed while another wave, and another, washed over him. Wiping his eyes, he turned his head, his eyes wild with fright.
 The ceiling was gone.
 The attic was gone.
Black, angry storm clouds blistered above him and all around him roared a mighty ocean.

Sisters Unto Death
I looked up for Papa but could see him nowhere. The stairs were empty, the deck was empty. I scurried up the stairs. “Papa!” I screamed. The wind lashed through my sodden hair, taunting me with its laughter. “Papa!” I ran to the bulwarks and peered over the edge. Nothing. Only the blackness of the huge waves, mounting in height, ready to sweep over us again.
“Papa!”

The Case of the Gasping Garbage (Doyle & Fossey: Science Detectives)
SUDDENLY, THE GARBAGE CAN GASPED. It trembled. It burped and yurped. It belched and yelched.
All in all, it was very scary indeed.
Drake and Nell immediately went to work. They pulled on surgical gloves. Snap!
Gabby edged toward the door. “You’re not going to take off the lid, are you?”
“If there’s a monster inside,” Drake replied, “removing the lid would be most foolish. Now, stand back, we’ll take it from here.”

The Case of the Mossy Lake Monster (Doyle & Fossey: Science Detectives)
AT FIVE-THIRTY IN THE MORNING, Drake and Nell stood at the water’s edge. Mist hung over the lake, and everything looked just a tad creepy.
 “Ready, Scientist Nell?” asked Drake.
“Ready as I’ll ever be.” Nell snapped on her life preserver, grabbed an oar, and climbed into the boat. They pulled away from shore, rowing and rowing, until they reached the center of the lake.
And there they lowered their secret weapon. Code 61.

The Case of the Graveyard Ghost (Doyle & Fossey: Science Detectives)
“WELCOME TO THE GREATEST GHOST SHOW ON EARTH!” Sloane waved her arms around and said, “Abracadabra! Presto chango! Hocus-pocus! Alakazam!”
 Nothing.
And then, just as Nell was about to smugly cross her arms, there appeared . . .
 . . . a ghost.
A chill swept up Nell’s spine as both the ghost and the wind began to howl.
“Oh my gosh,” whispered Nell. “I can’t believe it. It’s real.”

The Case of the Barfy Birthday (Doyle & Fossey: Science Detectives)
“WHAT SEEMS TO BE THE TROUBLE, MS. JACKSON?” asked Drake.
“It’s my twin sister, Chloe.” Zoe pointed across the emergency room lobby. Both Drake and Nell gasped as Chloe bent over a basin on her lap and . . . well . . . barfed.
 “Eew,” said Zoe.
 “Ugh,” said Nell.
 “Oh dear,” said Drake.
Nell flipped open her lab notebook. “Why don’t you take it from the top, Ms. Jackson.”
Zoe nodded. She cleared her throat. “You see . . .”
“Yes?” asked Drake, his pencil poised over his notebook.
“Yes?” asked Nell, tapping her foot.
Finally Zoe looked them square in the eye. “I think I poisoned my sister.”
